Sport and Exercise Medicine
Sport and exercise medicine encapsulates the medical care of any individual engaged in physical activity who sustains an injury or those who wish to obtain advice about starting an exercise program. Our medical specialists are experts in assessment and diagnosis for exercise related injuries. We work collaboratively with allied health professionals, GPs and other medical specialists to develop a plan and enable a safe return to activity, prevent recurrence and improve health and well-being.
Dr Wood, Dr Hasenkam and Dr Chamberlain have extensive experience with caring for elite athletes and working within professional sporting organisations. They apply their elite athlete expertise and treatment approach to all patients, whether their needs are related to everyday life, sport, work or looking to increase activity levels safely.
We take great pride in working with individuals of all ages and abilities to enjoy the benefits of physical activity in a safe, sustainable and enjoyable way. As Sport and Exercise Physicians, we recognise the importance and power of physical activity for overall health and well-being and work with our patients to facilitate exercise and healthy behaviours. We receive referrals from GPs, physiotherapists, osteopaths, podiatrists and other health professionals and medical specialists.
Our Sport and Exercise Medicine doctors promote safe and sustainable methods for individuals to undertake physical activity to assist with the management and prevention of chronic disease. Physical inactivity is a major cause of illness and disease in western societies with strong evidence that exercise levels are a significant determinant of disease. Obesity, diabetes, heart disease, osteoarthritis, mental ill-health and a number of cancers have a strong association with physical inactivity.
